Moona Lisa meets Moondrian I was one of 28 artists selected to participate in CowParade 2000, in West Orange, New Jersey. Switzerland began the tradition a few years ago, having artists paint full size fiberglass cows under corporate sponsorship and exhibiting them in major cities like Zurich - to go there click here. Last year Chicago sponsored 300 cows to great success including a book.
The New Jersey Cows were exhibited outside, throughout the town of West Orange, June 23 through Labor Day, 2000. After the exhibition, the cows were auctioned, with the proceeds going to charity. The NJ cows are considered part of the New York CowParade and can be seen at their site - click here.
ARTIST STATEMENT I immediately fell in love with my cow and with the process of working on her. My split personality design, looking totally different from each side, worked comfortably onto the 3-dimensional form although the width of her hips was unexpected. I wanted to use the theme of art from art history in my cow design as appropriation has been an important element in my paintings over the past 15 years. Da Vinci’s Mona Lisa and a design inspired by the work of Dutch Abstractionist, Piet Mondrian were paired together as they represent opposite ends of the painting spectrum in terms of content and application style. They also lent themselves very nicely to that contented “moo” sound.
