~ SIGNS & DIRECTIONS ~
Two headlights approach from a distance. The road is slick from a passing thunderstorm. There is a mild drizzle. With little roadside light, it is difficult to see the road ahead. Time is frozen at that eternal, dark midnight. The sinking feeling of being lost grabs your throat. Your mouth is dry, you need a drink. Even water would taste good now. “Where did I go wrong? How did I get so lost?” Then it appears, like a welcome metallic apparition signaling hope and salvation – a sign – pointing the way. You are no longer lost….at least for now.
In his new series of paintings, Signs & Directions, Robert Anderson delves further into the iconic images of the past to capture the spirit and desire of the open road. The signs that guide us, both literally and figuratively through our lives and are etched into our consciousness from childhood, become the connective link that binds these paintings together. Anderson recklessly pushes the context of his images, where connections of time, place and person orbit around each other in an entangled dance of passion and desire. Leading, suggesting, enticing, promising, pointing, controlling and ultimately protecting us from the chaos of modern culture and warning us of the dangers that lie ahead - signs - the truest symbols of our culture, ultimately define our direction. ~ Jack Schwartz
